Social Media Marketing and Digital Marketing are two terms that are not interchangeable. The actual meaning of Digital Marketing is easily misunderstood in an era where all the hype about social media is causing a lot of companies to invest heavily in such marketing. However, the truth is, digital marketing has long preceded social media invention.

The argument that ‘Digital marketing is Social media marketing’ can be easily dismissed when we take their definitions into consideration. Social media marketing involves the usage of only social media websites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram etc for promoting, advertising and creating awareness of a service or product. Digital Marketing consists of aspects that are crucial to a digital marketing strategy which includes Blogging, Affiliate Marketing, Online Reputation Management(ORM), Search Engine Optimisation(SEO), Search Engine Marketing (SEM), Pay per click (PPC), Voice Search Optimisation and Google Analytics. Basically, from the respective definitions above, we can easily conclude that social media marketing is just one component which comes under the vast umbrella that is digital marketing.
It paints a much clear picture of Digital Marketing as a course, which not only includes social media marketing, but goes above and beyond it, giving the course a much wider scope. Some institutes focus only on Social Media Marketing under the guise of teaching Digital Marketing, for which they demand a hefty amount as fees. It is vital to know the difference before you enroll yourselves.
Digital marketing incorporates marketing through all digital channels which can be used to promote a product and services are suitable candidates for the term ‘Digital Marketing’. Conversely, social media marketing is limited to marketing on the internet using only social media platforms. However, it must be noted that all internet marketing, including social media marketing is considered as digital marketing.
Digital marketing is more relevant in terms of creating brand awareness when it is done through Blogging, Affiliate marketing, SEO, SEM, ORM, Voice Search Optimisation etc. Although they have different online applications, all of them serve the larger purpose of brand advancement and customer conversion into leads and sales. Consumers have become more brand conscious these days with active participation, and most are spoilt for choice with a multitude of options available online. Their share in the overall marketing strategy has grown manifold which has rendered the traditional marketing strategy techniques obsolete.
So, it is vital to properly understand the contents of the Digital Marketing course so that you can carefully craft your strategy. Digital marketing is becoming the ace of marketing and doing it right might be the difference between success and failure. Social media marketing is only a part of Digital Marketing and hence the two go hand in hand, but in no way are both the terms interchangeable.
